Against the backdrop of rising populism and a loss of trust in governing institutions across Europe, there is today a growing disconnect between EU citizens and Brussels. From the financial crisis and the unprecedented influx of refugees to the recent UK vote to leave the EU, the European project has been riven by crises over the past few years. Every one of these predicaments has the potential to become a flash point, undermining progress the EU has made over more than six decades. This is why it is essential European institutions reconnect with their citizens. The principles upon which the open government initiative is founded can serve to revitalize European democracy. Openness, civic participation and strong governance are the cornerstone of this initiative. France Stratégie’s roundtable will map out how the EU can promote the transparency of its institutions and empower and better engage its citizens in the democratic decision-making process.
